Bio

Josh Yellon has continued to follow a path of musical discovery and expanding possibilities since taking up the bass in middle school. After-school lessons on bass, composition, theory and on saxophone at the Cleveland Music School Settlement along with summers spent at Interlochen Center for the Arts & Berklee College of Music exposed Josh to other like-minded musicians from around the world. At 18, he began playing the saxophone, and began studies at Cleveland State University & Tri-C Jazz Department. In 1996, he moved to NYC and studied rhythmic concepts with Jamey Haddad.

In 2002, Josh moved to Berlin, Germany and quickly re-formed his band UNKL modernjazzbeats. In addition, he collaborated with Sonnenstudios and M21 Studios on numerous recording projects. His active role in the modern Reggae band Bagga Riddim and section playing with the Baltic Soul Orchestra created performance opportunities with European & American celebrities such as The Temptations, Black Kappa and Kurtis Blow. This opened the way to many new creative opportunities and the chance to perform and record throughout Europe.

Now residing back in Cleveland Josh plans to continue finding other inspired musicians to collaborate with and keep deepening his concepts and sound.

His musical approach is one of personal exploration within the context of many stylistic genres.  The importance of finding a voice, strong rhythm and communication in music with musicians and audiences is for him beyond the need to classify or play within a certain “style”. Music is a language, and like all languages, it develops and changes.
